Environmental Assessment
Environmental assessments can take many forms, but all require the unbiased and thorough evaluation of environmental conditions and the likely impacts of a proposed project or development. These assessments aim to predict the environmental impacts at the early stages of project planning and design, and intend to find ways and means to reduce adverse impacts, and assist in shaping the project to suit the local natural and social environments. An environmental assessment, when done properly, can have both environmental and economic benefits, by reducing cost and time of project implementation, and avoid the need for costly clean-up, and contravention of laws and regulations.
Alexandra brings a wealth of experience and a pragmatic approach to all assessments, and is experienced in the regulatory processes required under the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act, the Yukon Environmental and Socio-economic Assessment Act, and the BC Environmental Assessment Act; as well as the various environmental assessment processes required by First Nations governments.
ElknWillow is also able to provide specific field services, all of which follow the BC Resource Inventory Standard Committee protocols and methods:
Completing environmental assessments and environmental management projects to territorial, provincial, or federal standards requires the close integration of indigenous science, because this knowledge must be understood to form a part of a larger body of knowledge which encompasses knowledge about cultural, environmental, economic, political and spiritual inter-relationships. Alexandra integrates traditional ecological knowledge research and the 10 Calls to Action to Natural Scientists Working in Canada into all of her projects.
Through working closely with her clients and invested stakeholders, Alexandra completes comprehensive assessments through the screening and scoping phases, through the evaluation of impacts, and will work with all interested parties to develop alternatives and effective mitigation measures for each project. In some cases, projects will require liaising with regulatory authorities, and monitoring or enforcement and environmental auditing, where Alexandra serves as an objective professional to ensure that any unpredicted impacts or failed mitigation measures are identified and addressed in a timely fashion.
